IDA Certification Journey

IDA Certification Journey

  • Autofiber has been a member of the IDA since January 2018.

This blog will be an accounting of my (Ian Rammelkamp - Owner of Autofiber) fulfillment of the IDA certification process.

While I am not a professional detailer by trade, I have been a supplier and product developer (and have detailed hundreds of vehicles over that time) in the industry since 2001, as a part of our company’s product testing and development.

As a Company we believe in supporting the industry (and primary industry association, the IDA). We have built our business by working intimately with companies and professional detailers to design new and innovative products. Our long term goal is to continue this process, and we see the IDA (and it’s network of detailers) as a big part of our future growth and development.

I think that it is important to continue my own personal development and education, so I will fulfill the requirements of becoming a CD and SV member of the IDA.

There are two phases to the certification process.

  1. CD - Certified Detailer
  2. SV - Skills Validated

My plan is to become an IDA CD/SV. I will document the process and provide test prep resources for other detailers who are looking to become IDA certified, and want an overview of the process.

I am fortunate to be friends with local San Diego professional detailer and founding member of the IDA, Prentice St. Clair, who will help me, and to my skills validation testing. He has also written a series of articles that overview the information and knowledge necessary to pass the tests.

I have asked him to write an article introducing the IDA Cerification Process. You can read it here: https://www.autofiber.com/blogs/news/ida-certification-program-overview

The first phase of the certification process (Certified Detailer - CD) is a series of 10 exams taken online, covering:

  1. Chemicals: Part 1, Part 2
  2. Detailing Terminology: Part 1
  3. Equipment: Part 1, Part 2
  4. Glass & Trim: Part 1
  5. Interior Detailing: Part 1, Part 2
  6. Leather & Seats: Part 1
  7. Paint Protection & Correction: Part 1, Part 2
  8. Prep Wash & Wash Bay: Part 1
  9. Safety & Compliance: Part 1
  10. Wheels & Tires: Part 1
