What is GSM?

What is GSM?

Towel fundamentals

Understand the number on the label. Explore how size changes weight. Find a towel that fits the job.

g/m²grams per square meter

GSM measures how much one square meter of fabric weighs. A 300 GSM fabric weighs 300 grams per square meter. For microfiber towels, that helps you compare fabric weight—but it doesn’t tell you everything about cleaning performance or quality.

01 / Match the towel to the task

What do you need your towel to do?

Start with the surface and the job. Then compare GSM alongside weave, size, and construction. These three towels show how different fabric weights fit different uses.

GLASS & MIRRORS

Smooth Glass

16 × 16 in. · Low pile

A smooth, lightly ridged surface for windows and mirrors. Use one damp towel to clean and one dry towel to finish.

These are product examples, not minimum GSM requirements. There is no single best GSM for every task.

02 / Look beyond the number

Is higher GSM better?

Not automatically. GSM measures weight per area, not quality.

Two towels can have the same GSM and different yarns, surface textures, and construction. Those differences affect how they work.

For glass, a smooth, low-pile towel can be the right tool. For drying, look at drying-specific construction and a size you can handle comfortably. A heavier towel isn’t automatically an upgrade for either job.

  • Weave & pileWhat does the working surface look and feel like?
  • Yarn qualityWhat fibers make up that surface?
  • ConstructionHow is the towel made and finished?
  • SizeWill it be comfortable to handle for your task?

03 / Try it yourself

Explore size, GSM & water capacity

Start with a 16 × 16-inch towel at 300 GSM. Change one setting at a time to see how dimensions and fabric weight affect the result. Drag the towel’s corner or use the sliders.

Capacity is an estimate. The 3×–7× setting is an adjustable assumption, not a tested rating for the products above. Actual absorption depends on the towel and the test method.

04 / Measure a towel you own

How to calculate GSM

You need the towel’s dry weight in grams and its actual length and width. Divide weight by area in square meters.

GSM = weight (g) ÷ area (m²)Using centimeters? Weight × 10,000 ÷ (length × width).

A 40 × 40 cm towel weighing 48 grams works out to 300 GSM.

A finished towel’s weight includes its edges and labels, so this is an estimate of the fabric specification. Measure one flat footprint; don’t double the area for its two sides.

05 / Common questions

A few things worth knowing

Does 300 GSM mean the towel weighs 300 grams?

No. It means one square meter of the fabric weighs 300 grams. The towel’s total weight depends on its size. Try changing the width or length in the Towel Explorer while keeping GSM at 300.

Is GSM the same as thickness?

No. GSM measures weight per area. It does not directly measure thickness or pile height. Compare a towel’s weave and construction as well as its GSM.

What GSM is best for drying a car?

There is no universal best number. Our 1100 GSM Dreadnought is one example of a drying towel, with a double-layer twist-pile design. Consider dimensions, weave, and how much towel you want to handle once it’s wet.

Can GSM tell me exactly how much water a towel will hold?

No. GSM and size can estimate dry fabric weight. Water capacity needs a measured absorption ratio. The Explorer lets you choose an illustrative multiplier; it does not predict a specific product’s tested capacity.

Should I buy the highest GSM towel I can afford?

Choose for the task first. The glass, plush detailing, and drying towels above have different constructions because they serve different purposes. Look at the whole towel before comparing numbers.
